Kenny KC Chan1, KL Lee2, Philip KN Lam3, KI Law4, Gavin M Joynt5, WW Yan6. From the Intensive Care Units of 1,6: Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital; 2,4: United Christian Hospital, 3,5: Prince of Wales Hospital, Hong Kong. Hong Kong Med J 2010;16:Epub 2010 Oct 6
Figure. A patient on ECMO being transported back to the ICU of Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital from another hospital where a team of four doctors and one nurse specialist from PYNEH performed on-site setup of ECMO there for this patient suffering from severe Mycoplasma pneumonia. The patient was considered too sick for transport because of relentless desaturation. ECMO promptly corrected the oxygen saturation and allowed safe transport. This patient eventually recovered. Similar scenario may occur in many other causes of acute respiratory failure indicated for ECMO, including influenza (H1N1) infection, therefore provision of on-site ECMO setup service is necessary.Link to the video clip on ECMO at the HK Medical J website here (narrated by Dr Grace SM Lam)
