The COVID-19 epidemic revealed the vulnerability of healthcare systems in many countries in the world and how they can rapidly be overloaded in excess of the available ICU bed and ventilator capacity. (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7276667/)
The stress experienced by individual intensive care units (ICUs) in Hong Kong was demonstrated by the need for an unusually large number of patient transfers between units to maximise the available ICU capacity, despite the implementation of surge strategies. (https://www.hkmj.org/earlyrelease/hkmj209033.htm)
Trained critical care specialists able to provide services in Hong Kong are very limited. Currently, we have less than 180 doctors working in ICUs under the Hospital Authority (HA) and around half of them are registered critical care/ intensive care specialists. Working in ICUs is a challenging but rewarding job.

Full-time critical care resident trainee or service doctor vacancies are available in various hospitals.
