The intensive care unit of Caritas Medical Centre was established since 1983. The founding director is Dr Cheung King On. Administratively, the ICU was under the department of medicine and geriatrics, though it is an independent clinical service provider.

On the 14th September 2002, the ICU moved from Wai Ming Block to the newly established Wai Shun Block, where 6 beds of Coronary Care Unit was integrated.
On 1st February 2008, 3 beds of High Dependency Unit were re-allocated to under the care of ICU team. At present, the whole unit at 5A of Wai Shun Block consists of 8 ICU beds, 3 HDU beds and 6 CCU beds. Besides, three surgical HDU beds are being under the care of department of surgery.
